WATER TUNNEL HYDRODYNAMICS - EXPERIMENTS AND TESTING

TUNNEL SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Dimensions: Closed circuit, 28' l x 8' h x 4' w
  • Test Section: 8' long x 2' square
  • Volume: 5,700 U.S. gallons
  • Material: Steel coated with marine polymide epoxy
  • Power: 300 HP V8 driving a 32" dia brass prop
  • View ports: 3 view ports in test section 4' l x 1'-8" h
  • Velocity range: 1.2-4.0 m/s (2.33 - 7.77 knots) (up to Re=4 x 10 6 /m of model length)
  • Temperature range: 40°F - 90°F (titanium chiller) +/- .5°F
  • Lighting: Full ambient to dark
  • Water: Fresh or sea
  • Instruments: 2-D LDV, pitot tube, force balance, temperature, salinity, etc.
Flow visualization capable with dye injection into flow.

Instrumented with LASER Doppler Velocimeter mounted on 3 axis traverse which can non-intrusively measure 2-D point velocity and profiles. The LDV can be used in hostile environments and needs no calibration.

Custom instruments and/or pitot tubes, temperature probes, salinity probes, etc. can be easily installed.

The tunnel can be used for a range of test applications. A flat plate test fixture allows the study of skin friction drag and turbulent boundary layer structure. Experiments to quantify the flow dynamics around test models as well as full-scale oceanographic instruments can be conducted. Bluff body wakes can be investigated. Calibrations of other velocity measuring instruments can be made.
